2015 Metro Times Wine Store of the Year!
Two to Tango...
Two new wines from Argentina!
And they ain't Malbec...
$99 Holiday Reds Mixed Case now available...
Our best ever!

New Kid on the Block! Argentine wines debut in Michigan...

Sure, they make Malbec. Normally when you are talking wine from Argentina--and especially from the province of Mendoza--it starts with Malbec. But what caught our fancy this summer, when representatives from Fincas Don Martino made their first foray into Michigan, was the quality (at nearly half the cost of their excellent Malbec) of their Reserve Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. And so in keeping with our ongoing mission to bring you the unsung, the unseen, the unheralded masses of sensational wines at bargain prices, here's Tom's take on these two gems:

2014 Fincas Don Martino The Old Vines Cabernet Franc Reserva
Reg. price: $24
Sale price: $18.99 (no further discounts)
Tom's note: "This reminds me of a  St. Emilion from Bordeaux, not Mendoza Argentina.  I guess it's the classy flavor profile of the Cabernet Franc.  Normally, Malbec is usually the best red grape from Argentina, but this is fantastic!  The nose has great aromas of cassis, tobacco, and a mineral note that reminds one of rich black dirt.  It's really good, beautiful dark fruits, balanced with subtle oak notes and a long lingering finish."

2013 Fincas Don Martino The Old Vines Chardonnay Reserva
Reg. price: $21
Sale price: $16.99 (no further discounts)
Tom's note: "The Chardonnay is delicious, with notes of lemon curd and buttered popcorn on the nose.  It has a rich, somewhat buttery texture, caramelized pineapple and toasted nuts reminiscent of a good Chassagne Montrachet from Burgundy."

It's here! 2016 Holiday Reds Mixed Case our best yet!

And now, with the kind of forward thinking usually reserved for the Secret Service Advance Team or NASA engineers (think about it: how do they launch a probe and know it's going to land on Mars two years later?), we are proud to announce the 2016 Holiday Reds Mixed Case!

By now longtime fans of Cloverleaf are well aware of this noble tradition (or its springtime counterpart that features white wines). What we've done is put together this case of 12 terrific bottles of wine, from 6 different countries.  These wines are all taste-tested by our staff and are all fantastic values in themselves-and then we discount the whole case by 25% more. That's right, the wines collectively would retail at $131 bottles for the case, but at deep discount $99 you are getting them for an average of $8.25 per bottle!

It's no secret why this collection sells hundreds of cases each fall. Convenience is the key. Our Holiday Reds Mixed Case eases the time crunch of the holidays by providing a grab-it-and-go source of great quality wines that you can rely on for all kinds of dinners, parties, and soirees. Picture it now: an evening in early December, already dark now for hours, 37 degrees, a freezing spray falling from the sky, and you need to get out of the car to pick up a bottle of wine from the Rite Aid, where you'll pay twelve bucks for the kind of swill they would sell at a Rite Aid.

Or.

You can simply pull another beauty from this Holiday Reds Mixed Case, a wine that will impress your friends and allow you to say enigmatic things like "Romanian wines are really gaining a following" or "My wine guy has the best connections in the city." Real quality almost hipster stuff! Everyone wins! So, without further ado, here is the 2016 lineup:

Recent hits, raves, and new discoveries...

2014 Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rouge
Reg. price : $28
Sale price : $22.99 (no further discounts)
Tom's note:"Looks and smells like premier cru red burgundy, with tons of tart bing cherries, rhubarb, cranberries, tea leaves and minerals.  Good weight on the palate, with a beautiful balance of cherry fruit and tea notes. Great persistence in the finish, really reminds me of a premier cru red burgundy that we sell for $38.00! Last year, the previous release was a huge hit, many customers were asking about it for months after we sold out and could not get anymore."

2012 Bodegas Breca "Breca" (Calatayud, Spain)
Reg. price: $18
Sale price: $13.99 (no further discounts)
Tom's note: "This wine is terrific!  It pours dark ruby-purple and has great aromas of black raspberry, cassis, provencal herbs & white pepper.  Gorgeous lush ripe fruits, subtle toasty vanilla notes and a long smooth finish.   If you like rich, full-bodied new world styled red wine, for $13.99, this wine can't be beat!"

2012 Chateau des Karantes Bergerie (La Clape, Languedoc, France)
Reg. price: $13.99
Sale price: $9.99 (no further discounts)
Tom's note: "The 2012 Bergerie is a blend of 45% Syrah, 35% Grenache, and 20% Mourvedre. It has aromas of ripe black fruits, cracked black pepper, and sweet Provencal herbs. It is full-bodied and dense on the palate, loaded with blackberry and blueberry fruits, and a nice balance of smooth ripe tannins that will support a graceful 8-12 years of cellaring."

2011 Domaine des Amadieu Le Haut de Beauregard (Cairanne, France)
Reg. price: $27
Sale price: $14.99
Tom's note: "This wine has a beautiful nose of ripe bing cherries, coarse ground black pepper, thyme, and lavender.  Full-bodied on the palate with mouthwatering flavors of kirsch, boysenberry, raspberry, lifted by black tea and anise details.  Reminiscent of a very good Chateauneuf, it is delicious today and will age for another 7-10 years."

2011 Domiane de la Verriere Le Haut de la Jacotte (Ventoux, France)
Reg. price: $28
Sale price: $14.99
Tom's note: "The wine pours purple-black, it has a great nose of blackberries, currants, violets, and peppered, cured  meat.  Very full-bodied on the palate with dense flavors of black currant jam, blueberries, nicoise olives forming the core, while black licorice accents and adds range and energy.  The wine has great structure and silky tannins, letting the fruits win out easily on the finish.  A beautiful wine."

2013 Chateau Pesquie Cuvee des Terrasses (Ventoux, France)
Reg. price : $15
Sale price : $12 (ALL discounts DO apply)
Tasting note from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "91 points. The 2013 Ventoux Terrasses offer gorgeous garrigue, white pepper, underbrush and sweet berry fruit to go with a forward, seamless, elegant style on the palate. Year in and year out this cuvee is an incredible value and a no brainer that readers need to buy.

About Chateau Pesquie, the Wine Advocate's Jeb Dunnuck had this further to say: "Easily one of my favorite estates from the up-and-coming Ventoux region, Chateau Pesquie is run by the talented brothers, Alexandre & Frederic Chaudiere. The wines sell for a song, yet always deliver high-quality, loads of character and impeccably made profiles.

2013 Virgil's Vineyard Smuggler's Son Red Blend
Reg. price: $37
Sale price: $29.95
Tom's note: "The wine has an opaque, dark ruby color, ripe dark berry notes on the nose with a very nice, rich texture. Loads of sweet blackberry and boysenberry flavors along with pretty notes of baking spices and soft tannins. Just a delicious, satisfying glass of full-bodied Napa Valley Red."

2014 Castello della Sala Bramìto Chardonnay
Reg. price: $19
Sale price: $15.99 (no further discounts)
Tom's note: "This smells like $40.00 French White Burgundy!  Beautiful aromas of lemon curd, toasted hazelnuts with some hints of vanilla and tropical fruits. On the palate, it has a nice rich texture, subtle flavors of pineapple, citrus, and roasted nuts with great crisp acidity.  This wine is a gorgeous hypothetical blend of elegant French White Burgundy and a top notch California Chardonnay at a steal of a price!"

2015 Domaine La Guarrigue Cuvee Romaine
Reg. price: $17
Sale price: $13.99
Tom's note: "Great nose of rich blue and black fruits, with hints of lavender and kirsch.  Still a bit grapey, but has great bold fruit and acid components in balance foreshadowing a great wine waiting to come together in a couple of months. It has beautiful density and texture reminding me of the 2009.  The wine drinks pretty well today, but I feel will be outstanding in 2-3 months and last for 7-10 years."

2015 Metro Times Wine Store of the Year!
Sincerely, it's a Sancerre...
Drinks "like a grand cru red Burgundy"
For just $22.99...

What's in a name?

One of our favorite wines of last year, and one of the biggest and happiest surprises we’ve had in some time, was the 2013 Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre Rouge. "Most people don’t even know that red wine is made in the Sancerre region, which borders Burgundy," says our Tom Natoci. "Because it is not made technically in Burgundy, they call it Sancerre Rouge. The distinction here is nothing but a marketing matter, because the wine speaks for itself."

Most wine connaisseurs think of Sauvignon Blanc when they think of Sancerre wine. But because Sancerre borders Burgundy, there is some Pinot Noir grown there-and grown quite well. "This is a fantastic bargain on a wine of this quality, Tom said. "The Burgundy they make a few miles away would carry twice the price. Don’t believe me? Come on in and try it this weekend. You’ll be blown away."

2015 Metro Times Wine Store of the Year!
Cousins from France!
Close-out pricing on two gems...
Nearly 50% off regular price!!!
U.S. exclusive...meet the importers Saturday
Taste the wines, talk about their origins

Might want to get in on this action...

Small-lot French wines at close-out pricing? Yes!

Let's kick off September with a bang kids! Sometimes one is presented with the Real Deal, and would be wise to take advantage. Our importers of these terrific 2011 southern Rhone reds are neighbors with the winemakers in France and may have even helped with the harvesting, the stomping, and what have you. They brought the wines in a few years ago and are now asking us to help close out inventory to make room for newer vintages.

This tremendous opportunity to get in on some five year old wines that stand shoulder-to-shoulder with good Chateauneuf du Pape will not last long. The wines would normally sell for close to $30 and we are able to offer them at $14.99! They come from small, family-run operations in Provence, only come in to the U.S. through this import company, and are only available at Cloverleaf. Here's a chance to re-stock your cellar at bargain pricing.

Gary and Cathy will be in-store this Saturday, September 10 from 1 pm to 5 pm to pour tastings, and to talk about the winemakers and life in Provence. Bring your checkbooks!
